Wildfire

Wildfire on the along the West Coast Road (HWY 14) to Port Renfrew ©johncameron.ca

With the increasing danger of wildfire in BC this summer, I’m reminded of an aborted trip I made hoping to get our Four Wheel Camper to my favourite spot on San Juan Beach near Port Renfrew for a few days in 2015. (see Port Renfrew)

1:00 pm on the Pacific Circle Highway just before it was closed to traffic. And just before I turned around and headed back to Salt Spring Island…

A 135 hectare fire, one kilometre from Lizard Lake (27 kilometres SW of Cowichan Lake) was discovered and the highway was suddenly closed to traffic. This was a suspected human-caused fire. Argh.

I felt for this rider out in the open heading through the growing smoke back to Lake Cowichan…
