The fine folks from Saltspring Fruitsicles ran a very young and growing business when they came to me for studio photography.
The decided they wanted to highlight their “delicious, nutritious and affordable treats” on a simple and clean white background. We did some test shooting and realized the light should fall off a bit in the foreground to ‘ground the image’. The image at the top of this post was our first test shot.
Next, a designer arrived with props…ideas, and a heat gun…
Technical: Generally, shooting objects in a studio gives the photographer the most control and the ability to easily replicate the light from a previous shoot. In this shoot the background was a roll of seamless 12 foot wide white matte paper. The main light (mounted directly above the products) was a large, round octabox which produced a soft white, natural and diffused light throughout the image. Additional diffused lights were used on the front corners and on the background.
So four lights were pointed at the subject, one on the background to keep it white. All lights were flashes, remotely triggered by the camera and the exposure was checked with a flash meter.
Settings: ISO 100, flash 1/125 sec, f/14 (for depth of focus), 100mm macro lens, Profoto flashes and light modifiers
