A Dark-eyed Junco stopped at our bird spa. This photo was taken through our office window to the bird bath (about 20 feet away).
Making only very slow/small movements behind the window often gives you more opportunities to get the photo you want.
note: this photo was cropped in software in order to ‘get closer’ to the bird and eliminate unnecessary items in the image (the full image using a 400mm lens includes the full width of the birdbath).
Cropping (“zooming in”) generally works when you are using the image on a website because the image is rarely larger than 2400 pixels on the longest side. But when printing, particularly with larger images you want the full resolution of the original image to show the most detail.
The Canon R5 camera I was using has 8192 horizontal pixels and 5464 vertical pixels.
Technical: Canon EOS R5 , ISO 1600, 1/640 sec, f/11, 100-400mm zoom lens at 400mm, handheld.
