Snow Day

Snow on Lawnhill Drive on Salt Spring Island.

“It never snows on Salt Spring Island”. Or so we were told as we looked at property before moving there.

Too bad we thought. We kinda love the change it brings to a place, even if it’s for just a few days. A quiet—like the village at the top of a ski resort with snow decorating all the fir trees.

Now I’m not talking about the west coast whiteish rain and the big floppy wet flakes that splash down the back of your neck. Nope, we loved the snow that disrupts the normal and sometimes provides a fair number of ‘snow days’; days where you get shovel and play exercise.

And of course that includes “the big snow of ’96” which, admittedly did get to be a bit much, what with close to four feet on the ground, roads unplowed, power out for 12 days…and our off-road customized truck with great ground clearance…which sat like a big sissy going nowhere.

A few more photos from the place that doesn’t get snow:

High school students walk along Rainbow Road in the now. They are heading for the water taxis which will deliver them to Mayne, Galiano, Pender, or Saturna.
