This is the Saltspring Island Library shortly after the building was completely finished in 2012. I had earlier completed a great many construction photos for the building’s architect and the construction trades, but decided to try one last image: a midnight shot.
My experience with night architecture ofter reminded me that I did not control the lighting, pedestrian or vehicle traffic…nor a great many other variables. Lots of things could go wrong.
I was lucky on my second attempt. The weather was more interesting with a moon ducking in and out of the backlit clouds. There was virtually no pedestrian or vehicle traffic and there was a perfect spot to locate my truck in the middle of the road.
The tripod and camera were setup in the truck bed (to eliminate possible movement) and I was able to shoot with a hand held remote from the sidewalk. I used a ’tilt-shift’ lens to ensure correct perspectives in the image.
