Mountain Stream

This hidden Saltspring Island stream is close to—but not seen from—the road. After crashing through the mountain forest, the water enters a very large culvert under the road, then tumbles again down a long deep gulley to the ocean.

These first two images were shot a month apart using different focal length lenses.

This third image below was shot about a year earlier. After a night of rain, this spring day illustrates the volume of water, and the power and the speed involved.

This long exposure shows that the rushing water causes its own breeze and moves the ferns and fir branches.

The stream made surprising amount of noise that day as rocks tumbled unseen under the water. Driving along the road with the windows down, this strange, muffled tumbling noise was led me to ‘discover’ the stream.
