Shortly after purchasing a large, shiny new Canon 300mm f/2.8 lens in June 2004, I headed up to Nanaimo for Round 1 of the Canadian Nationals. It was a great day with excellent access to the track for close images and good backgrounds.
These are full frame images (uncropped), captured at eight frames per second, with autofocus and continuous shooting. The camera was set to f/4 for a very shallow depth of focus. This way, only the main subject (Dusty Klatt below) is in focus.
“Round 1 of the CMRC Canadian Motocross Championships held on Sunday, June 13, 2004 in Nanaimo, BC was won with clean sweeps by the Blackfoot Racing Honda duo Dusty Klatt and Jean Sebastien Roy. Klatt totally demolished the competition in the 125cc West Championship; JSR did the same in the 250cc Nationals.” –Motocross Action Magazine
Reminder: Some images (like the horizontal image of Honda rider, Dusty Klatt below) can be seen larger…if you mouse over an image and the cursor changes to a magnifying glass, you can click to see a larger version. This is particularly useful on a large screen.

This was my first try at shooting motocross. Excellent access to the course, high level athletes, the right equipment and practice photographing moving objects made it possible to get these results and to make large crisp prints .
