On my way home from a morning photo walk, a young deer crashed across the trail ahead and into a dark ‘thicket’. Just a few meters in, it stopped and remained still, thinking perhaps that I could no longer see it.

I stopped too, and very slowly brought the camera up and took one image.


Technical: Canon EOS R5 , ISO 4000, 1/320 sec, f/8, Canon RF 100-400mm at 400mm, handheld

note: despite the real implications of the very low available light: the high ISO 4000 (adds noise to the image) and the necessary ‘slow’ shutter speed 1/320 sec (too slow to handhold a 400mm lens or to stop motion), this image seemed to work…on screen at least…
