A sole person walks from the tide line at Fernwood Beach on a ‘zero’ tide afternoon in the summer. In June, when school is still in session, a very low tide would see multiple classes visiting from Fernwood Elementary School, just up (you guessed it…) Fernwood Road.

Iconic Fernwood Pier on the north shore of Salt Spring Island.

“Once called Beggsville after Jonathan Begg who ran the first store. Settlers landed here in July 1859. Fernwood was a port of call for shipping between Victoria and Nanaimo.

The first public dock was built in 1901, the present structure in 1959.”
