The top image shows a full resolution photo of the moon yesterday morning at 5:30 a.m. with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Below is the same image cropped then ‘enlarged in software’ in an attempt make the moon larger on your screen. This ‘kinda works’ for viewing on a phone or other very small screens.
While you can now see more detail on the moon surface on a phone, the image starts to becomes ‘grainy’ or begins to ‘break up’ when viewed on larger screens (or when printed larger than 6 or 8 inches). The solution to this kind of problem is to create the photograph with a longer lens (for example 800mm or 1000mm) and print a crisp image up to four feet.
