Math Class

Math in the modern classroom.©johncameron.ca

In this Math classroom there are no rows of desks. Actually, there are no desks—and haven’t been for at least a decade.

There are tables grouped in the centre of the room, often used at the beginning and near the end of classes. There are whiteboards on three sides (windows cover the fourth side). And there appears to be total engagement by the students working in groups on challenges at the whiteboards. A teacher, moves between the groups asking students and groups questions. (Yes, in this classroom, the teacher asks many of the questions and often answers a student’s or group’s question with a helpful question…)

Technical: Photographing in this kind of setting can seem challenging, but once you have your near silent camera’s settings sorted out, it’s easy to wander around the classroom: students are fully engaged and don’t seem to notice you are there.
